Importantly, the interlinking method and power source are separate. A mains-powered alarm can be RF interlinked, so an electrician may be needed to make the electrical connection even though no interlink cable is installed.

If your home already has mains alarms installed, you may be able to add battery-powered RF alarms without carrying out new electrical work. However, the compatibility of the alarms and the requirements applying to the property should always be checked first.

How to Fit Interlinked Smoke Alarms Yourself

Installing battery-powered interlinked alarms is fairly straightforward where DIY installation is permitted, provided you plan the locations carefully and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

The important part isn't just getting the alarms onto the ceiling. They need to be positioned correctly, properly connected and tested as a system.

What You'll Need

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • Battery-powered interlinked smoke, heat or carbon monoxide alarms

  • A screwdriver, and a drill if you're not using adhesive pads

  • A ladder

  • Safety goggles if drilling into a ceiling

Step 1: Plan Your Alarm Locations

Step 2: Check the Alarms Are Interlinked

For a screw-mounted installation, drill the required holes, fit the appropriate wall plugs and secure the mounting plate. The alarm head can then be attached according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 4: Test the System

With all the alarms in position, give the system one final test. Press the test button on an alarm and check that every interconnected unit responds as expected.

This confirms that the alarms are communicating as a system, rather than simply showing that each individual alarm works.

If one fails to respond, check the pairing and manufacturer's troubleshooting instructions before relying on the system.

Do You Need Building Control or Electrician Sign-Off?

For a battery-powered system, there is normally no fixed electrical installation work involved. However, whether Building Control approval or certification is required can depend on the type of building work taking place and the circumstances of the installation.

For mains-powered alarms, the electrical installation must comply with the relevant electrical safety requirements. In England, this includes Part P of the Building Regulations. Not all electrical work has to be carried out by someone registered with a competent person scheme. Where applicable, work can instead be inspected and certified through Building Control or another permitted certification route.
